If I have one thing to impart before the New Year to my fellow creatives feeling the pressure of doing all the things, it is this:

If you’re a multi-passionate creator, traditional planning advice maybe hasn’t worked for you; Linear plans assume focus moves in a straight line and creativity rarely moves this way.

You don’t need fewer ideas. You need a system that can hold more than one.

This is the planning approach I’m using as I look toward 2026.

It’s not necessarily about “doing” more. It’s about working with your creative energy instead of against it.

About Last Week…

Why Traditional Planning Falls Apart for Multi-Passionate Creators

Most planning systems are built around rigid timelines, singular goals, and constant output. That structure can feel motivating at first, then slowly turn into pressure.

For multi-passionate creators, the problem is not a lack of discipline. It’s that:

• Creative energy comes in cycles

• Multiple projects compete for the same bandwidth

• Interests evolve throughout the year

• Life rarely follows the plan on paper

When planning doesn’t account for this, it creates guilt instead of clarity.

A better system allows for movement, adjustment, and honest check-ins.

A Flexible Planning System for 2026

This system focuses on orientation instead of control. Think of it as a map rather than a schedule.

The five parts:

1. Creative Focus Areas

2. Anchor Projects

3. Seasonal Planning

4. Minimum Viable Progress

5. Built-In Reflection

Each piece works together to support momentum without pressure.

Step 1: Define Your Creative Focus Areas

Instead of starting with goals, start with areas of attention.

Creative focus areas are the parts of your work and life that matter to you, regardless of how fast things move.

Examples:

• Writing or publishing

• Teaching or workshops

• Client or consulting work

• Learning and skill-building

• Personal creativity or rest

These areas give you stability. Even when projects shift, you still know where your energy belongs.

Step 2: Choose Your Anchor Projects

Anchor projects are the few initiatives that deserve protected time and energy. They move your work forward in a meaningful way.

Limit this to one to three projects for the year.

Anchor projects should:

• Align with your larger vision

• Have a clear outcome

• Feel important but sustainable

Everything else becomes flexible, seasonal, or optional. This alone removes a lot of pressure.

Step 3: Plan In Seasons, Not Months

Creativity doesn’t operate on a twelve-month grid. Seasons allow for focus and rest to coexist.

Try thinking in quarters or creative seasons:

• A season for deep work

• A season for visibility and sharing

• A season for learning or experimentation

• A season for recovery or recalibration

You’re not locking yourself in. You’re giving your energy somewhere to land.

Step 4: Redefine Success With Minimum Viable Progress

Progress doesn’t have to be maximal to be meaningful.

Minimum viable progress is the smallest version of consistency that still moves things forward.

Examples:

• One thoughtful post per week

• One workshop per quarter

• One habit that supports your creativity

This approach protects momentum without demanding perfection.

Step 5: Build in Reflection Loops

The most important part of this system is permission to adjust.

Set regular check-ins and ask:

• What’s working right now?

• What feels heavy or draining?

• What needs to change?

Reflection keeps your plan alive instead of static.

Your Most Creative Year Won’t Come From Doing More

Planning doesn’t need to feel restrictive. When done well, it becomes a form of self-trust.

And definitely not because I stopped caring.

Life got loud and my goals needed room to breathe. I needed time to recalibrate and percolate. To reflect and reframe. And to create a new plan of action that works for my time and energy in this season of my creative life.

If you’ve been carrying a quiet sense of overwhelm lately, this is your permission slip to stop fighting it and start working with it.

Overwhelm doesn’t usually mean you’re failing.

It often means you’re trying to meet expectations that no longer fit the season you’re in.

When The Goals Start Working Against You

Sometimes the pressure doesn’t come from what we want to do but from what we think we should have already done.

• The unfinished list

• The paused projects

• The content you meant to publish

• The momentum you thought you “lost” in the proverbial ether

And that starts with patience: Not the passive kind, but the intentional kind.

Step 1: Adjust The Goal, Not Your Self-Worth

If your goals are creating constant friction, it’s worth asking:

• Are the goals still aligned with my mission and what I’m striving to achieve?

• Is the timeline realistic right now?

• Am I measuring progress or punishing myself?

Adjusting a goal is not quitting.

It’s strategic self-trust.

Step 2: Take Stock of What Did Happen

Before you rush to fix what didn’t get done, pause and name what did:

• Skills you sharpened

• Lessons you learned

• Boundaries you set

• Rest you allowed

• Clarity you gained

Progress doesn’t always look like output. Sometimes it looks like stability.

Read that again.

Step 3: Choose One Small Forward Move

Momentum returns when expectations are on a more tangible scale.

Not:

“I need to catch up.”

But:

“What’s one doable step I can take this week?”

That can equal:

One post.
One page.
One conversation.
One decision.

Small progress compounds faster than guilt ever will.

We don’t set out to hoard ideas. But it happens.

A spark hits, we scribble it down, maybe even start building it out…and then life, self-doubt, or the next shiny idea pulls us away. Before long, our notebooks, drives, and apps are stuffed with half-finished projects that feel too precious to toss and too messy to share.

Here are the most common culprits for filling our creative clouds to the brim:

• Perfectionism: Waiting until it’s “ready” before sharing.

• Fear of Rejection: Not wanting to put something out that feels incomplete.

• Shiny Object Syndrome: Always chasing the new thing, never finishing the last.

The first step is realizing you’re not broken for hoarding ideas; Every creator does it.

The next step is learning how to release those ideas so they can finally work for you.

How to Let Go and Profit From Old Projects

Letting go doesn’t mean tossing your old projects in the trash—it means freeing them from the “someday” pile and putting them to work.

You don’t need to start from scratch. With a little repackaging and a fresh perspective, those drafts and half-finished ideas can become valuable content, digital products, or even income streams.

Here’s how to make it happen.

Do a Backlog Audit

• Skim through your clouds, folders, journals, and notes. Don’t forget old project management accounts, like Trello, Notion, Monday, ClickUp. You may even find old task lists in Google and half-finished files over in Google Docs!

• Highlight any ideas or drafts that still excite you (even a little).

• Ask yourself…

  • “Does this fit into any sort of theme that I’m currently working with?”

  • “Do I have more ways to expand on this initial concept?”

  • “Can I weave something new in, like a personal experience or current event?”

Repackage Into Smaller Pieces

Instead of shelving that half-finished project because it feels “too big,” shrink it down into something you can release right now.

Ask yourself: What’s the smallest useful piece I can share from this?

A single tip, a checklist, a short video clip, or one chapter turned into a blog post—all of these keep your idea alive while giving your audience immediate value.

• A half-written ebook could become a 3-part blog series.

• A course outline could turn into a workshop or PDF download.

• An unfinished podcast script could become a YouTube short.

Not every idea needs a grand reveal. In fact, some of the best momentum comes from testing your project in a low-stakes way: Sharing a scrappy version, a mini-offering, or even just a preview with your audience. This takes the pressure off, gets you feedback fast, and often sparks new directions you wouldn’t have discovered by waiting for “perfect.”

Here are just a few ideas to get your ideas flowing:

• Share a mini-version with your Substack readers.

• Offer a template, guide, or “beta” version at a discount.

• Let your audience’s response tell you if it’s worth more investment.

And here’s actionable ways to get your ideas underway:

For Writers: Share the first chapter of your unfinished book as a Substack post or PDF download, and invite comments.

For Artists: Post a rough sketch or early concept on Instagram/Notes and ask which direction people would love to see finished.

For Coaches/Educators: Offer a “beta” version of your workshop as a short live session or paid replay to test demand before building out the full program.

Bundle and Sell

Sometimes a single unfinished project doesn’t feel like enough to stand on its own. But when you combine a few related ideas, suddenly you’ve got a full-fledged offer.

Bundling lets you take smaller, half-finished pieces and package them into toolkits, guides, or collections that feel valuable and complete to your audience (and worth paying for).

• Collect related ideas into a toolkit, resource pack, or workshop series.

• Position it as “from the vault” or “previously unreleased”; Audiences love behind-the-scenes material.

• Early release creates accountability. Once your idea is live, you’re more motivated to refine it.

• Audience feedback = Free research and development. Instead of guessing what people want, let them tell you.

• Momentum matters more than a slick veneer. Publishing imperfectly keeps you moving forward instead of stalling out.

• Messy versions build trust. Audiences often prefer seeing the behind-the-scenes, scrappy side. It makes you and your work more relatable!

• Iterate publicly. Each update or version is a chance to reconnect with your audience and show progress.
  

The point isn’t to have a flawless finished product, it’s to circulate your ideas so they can help someone (and earn for you).

1. Pick one idea you’ve been sitting on for 6+ months.

2. Spend one hour this week breaking it down into a single, sharable piece of content.

3. Post it. See what happens.

4. Build momentum and repeat the process.

Why Sharing Feels Uncomfy

Dr. Eric Maisel calls this stage shy-mind anxiety. You know, that all-too-familiar fear of exposing your work to judgment, rejection, or worse: Deafening silence in the form of crickets online or an unenthusiastic response from followers.

It makes sense. Creative work is personal.

That’s vulnerable.

And it’s why so many creators stall at this point; Finished work that never leaves the notebook, the studio, the folder marked “someday.”

Why Sharing Matters

Here’s the brain reframe: Showing your work isn’t about proving its worth.

It’s about giving your creative work a chance to live.

Art, writing, music, design…They’re all meant to move through us, not stay locked inside us.

And sharing doesn’t have to mean a gallery show or a book launch. Although those are very beautiful, ambitious goals!

It can be:

• Sending a draft of your work-in-progress to a trusted friend or creative cohort

• Reading your poem aloud in a small group

• Posting a messy sketch on social media as #workinprogress #wipart

• Sharing an early version with your creative circle

Each act of showing strengthens your courage muscle.

The more you use that muscle, the more strength you’ll gain.

🛠️ This Week’s Practice: Define “Done”

1. Pick your audience. Choose one safe space to share: A friend, a group, or your online community. You are always welcome to share in the Creative Enabler chat, by the way!

2. Set your frame. Tell them what kind of feedback (if any) you want: encouragement, suggestions, or simply witness.

3. Release the work. Send it, post it, or share it live. Don’t overthink. Hit send.

“What’s scarier for me: Being judged, or never letting my work be seen at all?”

Let’s talk about how to figure out your next right step, whether it’s to start, pivot, or finish, and how to finally get out of the loop.

When It’s Time To Start

Start something new when:

• The idea won’t leave you alone (you think about it on dog walks, in the shower, while pretending to answer emails).

• You’re creatively stuck in a rut and need something that sparks energy again.

• You’ve already gathered insight or feedback that tells you this idea has legs.

• You're avoiding the thing you really want to build with busy work around the idea.

• You're craving growth, challenge, or fresh energy.

But give yourself a container (a time limit, a mini goal, a feedback loop) to avoid spiraling into shiny object purgatory.

When It’s Time To Pivot

You might need to shift gears if:

• The project you’re working on drains you more than it fuels you.

• The original idea no longer aligns with where you’re heading (or who you’ve become).

• You’re trying to force something that doesn’t fit your audience, your energy, or your goals anymore.

• You’ve lost enthusiasm for reasons that aren’t just fear.

• It’s costing more time, money, or energy than it gives back

You’re allowed to change your mind and your method.

When It’s Time To Finish

If you’re:

• 80% done but spinning in perfectionist limbo

• Procrastinating because you're scared of releasing

• Investing too much time even though now it’s about shipping it and learning from the result

• Avoiding finishing because it’s vulnerable to release…

…it’s probably time to finish.

Finishing without letting perfectionism call the shots

You’ve shown up.

You’ve worked through resistance.

You’ve stayed inside the chaos long enough to build something real.

Now comes one of the trickiest moments in the creative process: Knowing when to call it done.

The Trap of “Almost Finished”

Perfectionism has a way of stretching projects out forever.

We percolate. We revise. We convince ourselves one more edit will make it flawless.

But perfection is a moving target. The closer you get, the further it shifts.

Dr. Eric Maisel calls this stage critical-mind anxiety at its loudest.

But! The reality is that work trapped in your drafts folder doesn’t get to fulfill its purpose.

Done is what makes it real.

Done Doesn’t Mean Perfect

Declaring completion doesn’t mean you’ve stopped caring. It means you’ve decided your work is ready to exist in the world as it is right now.

Because no piece of creative work is ever really finished.

It’s simply completed and shared at a point where it can stand on its own.

Your job is to recognize that point, release the work, and trust that you can always create again.

🛠️ This Week’s Practice: Define “Done”

1. Write your finish line.
   In a sentence or two, describe what “done” looks like for your current project. Example: “A first draft with a beginning, middle, and end. No missing sections.”

2. Set a deadline.
   Pick a date this week to stop revising and declare completion.

3. Practice release.
   Say it out loud: “This is done. It’s allowed to be done.”

Celebrate that. Because most people never get here.

💭 Reflection Prompt:

“What’s stopping me from declaring this work complete and what do I gain by letting it be finished?”

You’ve been telling yourself you’ll get to it later.

Later, when you have more time.

Later, when you have the perfect idea.

The problem is that later isn’t coming. At least, not in the way you think.

Life doesn’t pause while you decide. The creative window you’re waiting for isn’t an open invitation.

It closes. Sometimes without warning.

And those ideas you’ve been stockpiling? They don’t get better with age.

They get dusty. The details fade. The excitement dulls.

Soon, these great ideas feel more like unfinished homework than opportunities.

Why We Hoard Ideas

Perfectionists and overthinkers tend to treat ideas like rare collectibles. We keep them “safe” because we don’t want to ruin them.

We imagine that if we wait long enough, we’ll have the perfect skills, connections, or circumstances to execute them flawlessly.

But ideas are not meant to be preserved. They are meant to be used.

They are raw materials, not finished products. Left untouched, they become heavier to carry.

And eventually, they weigh so much that you stop wanting to pick them up at all.

The Myth of the Perfect Moment

You will never feel completely ready.

The project will never be flawless from the start. And the truth is, your future self won’t magically have more time or more courage than you do right now.

If you’re waiting for some combination of confidence, clarity, and calm to show up before you start, you’re not waiting for “later”…You’re waiting for never.

Start Small, Start Messy

There’s a reason most unfinished ideas die in the mind: starting feels risky. You’re afraid that making the thing will destroy the perfect version you’ve imagined. But the longer you wait, the less connected you feel to that perfect version anyway.

Instead, treat starting as an experiment.

• Write the first paragraph, knowing it will change.

• Shoot the first video, knowing it will be awkward.

• Sketch the first design, knowing you’ll revise it later.

Momentum doesn’t come from thinking about the work. It comes from commitment and daily practice.

When you finally start, two things happen:

1. You discover what your idea actually is, beyond the fantasy version in your head.

2. You realize that action creates clarity. Every small step makes the next one more obvious.

Reconnecting with your project when the honeymoon phase is over

You’ve been showing up.

You’ve stayed in the work.

You’ve pushed through messy drafts, awkward sentences, and the occasional “Why am I even doing this?” moment.

And then…The sparkle fades.

Missed Last Week?

When the Magic Wears Off

Every creative project has a honeymoon phase.

It’s fresh. It’s exciting. You’re convinced you’ve unlocked your magnum opus.

Then one day, you look at your work and think: “Meh.”

It’s not broken but the thrill is kinda gone.

This is normal. It’s not a sign you should quit.

It’s a sign you’ve entered the long middle, the part where finishing takes precedence over feeling.

Naming the Resistance

Dr. Eric Maisel calls this critical-mind anxiety: The inner monologue that tells you your work isn’t good enough (and maybe never was).

The cure isn’t to shut your inner critic up completely. That voice might actually have a few valid points about what’s working and what isn’t.

The key is to keep going while the voice is talking.

How to Love the Work Again

You don’t have to feel the rush of inspiration to make something great.

Instead, try these ways to rekindle your connection:

1. Change the lens.
   Work on a different section, angle, or element to see your project from a new perspective.

2. Micro-celebrations.
   Mark small milestones. Finished a paragraph? Chose a color palette? That’s a win.

3. Remind yourself why.
   Go back to the moment you committed to this project. What made it worth your time in the first place?

• Commit to three focused sessions, no matter how you feel about the work.

• Start each session by reading your original Declaration of Commitment from Week 5.

• End each session by writing one thing you still appreciate about your project.

Every idea you chase, project you start, and conversation you entertain comes with a cost.

Not just in time, but in creative energy, the currency that fuels everything you make.

Unlike money, you can’t simply “make more” by working longer hours or getting a side gig.

Your energy replenishes with rest, joy, and focus, but it’s still finite.

And once you’ve spent it for the day, you can’t just charge it to tomorrow’s account without paying interest in the form of burnout.

Why Creative Energy Leaks Happen

Energy leaks often show up in sneaky ways. It’s not like you’re out here trying to catch burnout. None of us are!

Be on the lookout for these creativity zappers:

• The overcommitment trap: Saying yes to collaborations or projects that sound fun in theory but don’t align with your bigger vision or require too big of a time/energy commitment that will take you away from what you’re already working on.

• Shiny object syndrome: Dropping what’s working to chase the newest trend, tool, or tactic before you’ve given your current plan a real shot.

• Emotional drainers: People who love picking your brain but never take action, leaving you feeling like you just did unpaid consulting.

Each leak may feel small, but over time, they add up, leaving less in the tank for the work that actually matters.

Making High-Return Creative Investments

When you think of your creative energy like a budget, you start asking better questions before spending it:

• Is this worth the hours and focus it will require?

• Does it serve my long-term goals or just keep me busy?

• If I finish this, will I feel proud or just relieved?

A high-return project doesn’t have to be flashy.

It could be finishing a piece of writing that’s been stuck in drafts for months, finally launching that small digital product, or deepening your connection with your most engaged audience members.

The return is in the momentum it creates.

You May Like:

Protecting the Creative Bank

Like money, your creative energy needs boundaries and security:

• Block off deep work time and treat it as non-negotiable.

• Be slow to say yes. Give yourself 24 hours (or more!) before committing to anything new.

• Batch low-energy tasks (emails, admin, editing) so they don’t drain your peak creative hours.

Think of yourself as the CFO of your own creative life, making decisions that keep the account healthy and growing.

Your Energy Is Your Edge

You can have all the tools, followers, and ideas in the world, but if your creative energy is scattered across too many half-starts and should-do’s, your best work never gets the focus it deserves.

Protect it. Invest it.

And watch how your creative “wealth” compounds over time.

• What distracted me?

• What surprised me?

You’re not just building a project. You’re learning how you work best.

When I’m deep in the work, what patterns pull me out and what helps me stay in?

Spoiler: It’s different for everyone. Your job is to notice your own rhythm, not force someone else’s.

You don’t need to be in a magical trance to make meaningful progress.

We don’t just start once.

Then show up for it like it’s non-negotiable.

15 minutes. 30. An hour if you can swing it.

Turn off distractions. Light a candle. Stretch first. Put your phone in a drawer.

And then…just begin.

Write the first sentence.

Name the first idea.

Make the first mess.

Whatever it is, start it.

And then document how it felt. That reflection is part of the process.

So you’ve chosen your idea.

Maybe you’re excited. Maybe you’re nervous.

Here’s something few creators talk about:

The hardest part of commitment isn’t making the decision.
It’s making that decision again and again — every time fear resurfaces.

Once you’ve chosen your project, it becomes your mirror.

It reflects your desires, your avoidance, your patterns, your truth.

And that can be deeply uncomfortable.

But it’s also where your most meaningful work begins.

💬 The Meaning You Make Is the Fuel You Use

Eric Maisel reminds us: commitment must be meaningful.

Not just logical. Not just strategic.

It has to resonate with your inner reasons for creating.

Ask yourself:

• What does this idea say about who I am — or who I’m becoming?

“What does committing to this project make possible — for me, and maybe for someone else?”

Don’t worry if the answer feels personal, messy, or incomplete.

This isn’t an artist statement. It’s a grounding force.

It’s the thing you’ll return to when you’re tempted to quit or pivot or shrink.

There’s a persistent lie floating around in creator circles:

“You need to find the perfect niche before you can be successful.”

Cue the paralysis.

Cue the endless journaling sessions.

Cue the 4 a.m. research rabbit hole spiral of “profitable niche ideas 2025.”

The pressure to nail your niche before you even start often ends up doing one thing: Stopping you from creating anything at all.

🎯 The Problem With the "Perfect Niche"

The idea that there’s one ultra-specific, hyper-profitable, never-before-seen niche just waiting for you to stumble across it? It’s a myth. A perfectionist trap. A stall tactic in disguise.

You don’t need to shrink your creative identity into a tight little box to be successful. In fact, many successful creators grew into their niche by doing, not overthinking.

Trying to find your niche before you’ve made any content is like trying to find your dream home without ever stepping inside a few fixer-uppers.

It’s okay if it’s messy at first.

🚧 What To Focus on Instead

Let go of the idea of picking the “right” niche and start focusing on these instead:

1. What do you actually enjoy creating?

Forget trends for a moment. What lights you up? What could you talk about for hours without a script? Your energy is contagious, and it’s the first step toward sustainability.

2. Who do you want to help, entertain, or connect with?

Your niche isn’t just what you talk about. It’s who you’re talking to. Focus on your people. Think about their problems, dreams, and scroll behavior.

3. What content are you already making without trying?

Check your camera roll, your drafts folder, your unposted stories. That’s often where your real niche is hiding: In the things you already naturally want to share.

4. What are people responding to?

Don’t just create in a vacuum. Pay attention to your analytics. What’s getting saved, shared, or commented on? That’s valuable data; Use it to shape your direction.

5. What’s sustainable for you?

Consistency beats novelty. If you can’t realistically produce a certain kind of content regularly, it’s not your niche. Build your content ecosystem around your capacity, not your ideal fantasy self.

✨ Your Niche Will Emerge

You don’t find your niche like a lost sock in the dryer.

You grow into it.

And over time, a clear through-line emerges in your work: The people you attract, the themes you revisit, the offers that click.

That is your niche.

And it didn’t come from a quiz, a course, or a late-night panic session.

It came from doing the damn thing.

🧪 Try This: The 3-Post Experiment

If you’re still feeling niche anxiety, here’s a low-stakes way to move forward:

1. Pick three themes you’re curious about sharing (Examples: Storytelling, digital art, mental health for creators).

2. Create and post one piece of content around each theme this week.

3. Reflect: Which was easiest to make? Which sparked engagement or feedback? Which felt aligned?

Let your action inform your direction.
